|Job Profile||Electrical Design Engineer|
An Electrical Design Engineer plays an essential role in any building project, whether it’s to develop an office complex, new housing estate, rail network or sports venue.
You’ll be designing, developing and managing the creation of control systems and networks, to make sure the finished project has the electrical power it needs.
Your expertise will lie in not just being able to visualise and design electrical systems, based on each project’s requirements, but also to manage the whole process, briefing colleagues and suppliers to make sure your designs come to life as you intended.
You’ll need technical as well as leadership skills, along with the ability to plan a project within budget and to the allocated timescale. During the project you’ll also need to report back to your senior managers and clients on how things are progressing.
Having excellent knowledge of all current electrical equipment, systems and how they can best be applied to different scenarios is essential, along with the ability to design and install it all in compliance with industry regulations.
Starting with an electrical apprenticeship gives you the best foundation for this career. From there you can gain HNC/HND in electrical engineering or similar subject, and progress towards a relevant Degree.
Once you have gained sufficient experience, there are opportunities to progress to Senior Design Engineer/Manager, or other senior management roles within a company. You may also wish to establish your own design company or consultancy.
